The Napa Valley River Cruise, Honestly Explained
What sails to California wine country by water today — and the best ways to pair Napa with a cruise.
Ask About Wine Country OptionsStart With the Facts
A Napa Valley river cruise is something many travelers search for and few websites answer straight. Here is the honest picture. The Napa River is a short, tidal river that winds from the town of Napa down to San Pablo Bay at Vallejo. In early 2023 American Cruise Lines began an eight-day California itinerary that brought its riverboat American Jazz up the Napa River for a winery visit, then on to Vallejo, Stockton and Sacramento. The line later removed it from its 2024 schedule, saying it hoped to return to the region, and we have found no overnight Napa sailings scheduled since.
So this site does two things. It explains what you can do on the water in and around Napa today — and there is more than you might expect — and it shows the real ways to combine California wine country with a cruise, or to take a genuine wine-region river cruise elsewhere in the U.S. or Europe.

The idea makes sense. Napa’s roads are busy on weekends, a designated driver is always needed and arriving by boat has an old-world charm. Before the railroad and the highway, the Napa River really was the valley’s link to San Francisco, with schooners and steamers carrying passengers and goods to the bay.
Today the river is mostly a place for recreation, and the riverfront in downtown Napa has been reshaped with restaurants, tasting rooms and a public dock. A short trip on the water is a pleasant way to start or end a day of tastings.

How We Can Help
Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can plan wine country around a cruise: a West Coast sailing from San Francisco with nights in Napa before or after, a Columbia and Snake river cruise with Washington wineries, or a European wine-river voyage such as those on Wine River Cruises. Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a Napa Valley river cruise?
Not as an overnight cruise at the moment. American Cruise Lines sailed an eight-day wine-country itinerary that included Napa in 2023, then withdrew it from later schedules. Today you can take short boat trips on the Napa River in downtown Napa and combine wine country with an ocean or river cruise elsewhere.
Can you take a boat from San Francisco to Napa?
Not directly to Napa. The public San Francisco Bay Ferry runs from downtown San Francisco to Vallejo, at the mouth of the Napa River, in about an hour; Napa is a short drive from there.
Do cruise ships stop near Napa Valley?
Ocean cruises that call at San Francisco offer Napa and Sonoma as shore excursions or as pre- and post-cruise stays. Sonoma and Napa are each roughly an hour or more by road from the city, depending on traffic.
Where can I take a real wine river cruise?
In the U.S., the Columbia and Snake rivers pass through Washington and Oregon wine country. In Europe, the Douro, Rhine, Moselle, Rhône and Bordeaux rivers are the classic wine cruises.
